Shortly after 9pm the SVFD was dispatched to a residence on Route 202 for reports of smoke coming from a boiler room in the basement of a house. Car 2441 and Tower Ladder 18 quickly arrived on scene and investigated. A steam leak was found, with negative fire. As units had just finished investigating and placed the incident under control the SVFD was dispatched to another reported structure fire on Sunderland Lane. 60-Control reported a possible chimney fire with extension to the residence.
Rescue 20, Engine 188, and Tower Ladder 18 all arrived at the same time 4 minutes after dispatch. They found a 2.5 story wood frame residential house with nothing showing. Tower Ladder 18 reversed up the driveway to position for roof operations while the crew from Engine 188 began investigating the interior of the residence. Car 2447 (TL-18 Lieutenant) established command. The homeowner reported flames from the chimney and the Ladder crew found signs of fire at the top of the chimney. Tower Ladder 18 and a 35 foot ground ladder were used for access to the top of the chimney and Engine 188 deployed a hand line with the “chimney snuffer” to extinguish the fire in the chimney and break up the creosote blockage. Car 2442 assumed command. The fire was extinguished. SVFD units operated for approximately an hour before returning to service.
