📍Location: IBM
🚨 Incident Summary: Somers Fire was dispatched to the former IBM building for a report of smoke inside the structure. Upon arrival, units reported no visible smoke or fire from the exterior. Once crews made entry, smoke conditions were confirmed inside.
Due to the size of the building, interior conditions, and limited water supply, a working structure fire (10-75) was transmitted to bring in additional resources, including tankers.
Crews located a room-and-contents fire approximately 100 feet into the structure. Due to the distance, firefighters deployed additional high-rise packs connected to the main attack line to reach and extinguish the fire.
The fire was quickly knocked down. Given the large footprint of the building, crews conducted a thorough search to ensure the fire was contained to the area of origin. Firefighters then conducted overhaul operations and ventilated the structure. The cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious.
⚠️ Safety Reminder: These buildings have significantly deteriorated over time and contain numerous hazards. They are private property, and entry is both dangerous and prohibited.
Units operated on scene for approximately 3 hours before returning to service. Thank you to all of the mutual aid departments and agencies who assisted on scene, as well as those who stood by to cover our district.
